Juicing is one of the easiest ways to boost your intake of health-enhancing phytonutrients. When I undertook a 20-day juice fast I learned a lot about the benefits of juicing, which also gave me a new enthusiasm for juice. It wasn’t until juices became the foundation of my nutritional intake that I realized just how fantastic they can be for recovering your health.
Liquid nourishment allows the digestive system to rest while providing your body with a super-nutritious food source. When your body is not engaged in the process of digestion there are more resources available for healing. Juicing is also one of the best ways to get quick energy any time during the day. I especially like to start each morning with fresh juice but I also often enjoy it as an afternoon pick-me-up.
I was so excited about juice after my fast that I decided to invest in a good quality juicer. Now I can’t believe it took me so long! I had heard about a few of the most popular juicers among raw foodies but I wasn’t sure what would best suit my needs. But when a friend told me about the Kuvings Whole Slow Juicer, I was intrigued, as it seemed like a unique machine.
I’m really happy with this investment so I am going to let you know some of the things I love about this juicer so you can decide if it is the right juicer for you as well.
The Kuvings Cold-Pressed Juicer
Kuvings is a Korean brand with a few different juicers in their line. The one that we purchased was the Whole Slow Juicer B6000 which uses slow-rotating masticating technology to produce cold-pressed juice by crushing and squeezing instead of shredding the produce.
This slow rotation system minimizes the amount of air introduced into the liquid and allows for a much greater preservation of nutrients and enzymes compared to a fast-spinning centrifugal juicer. Slow juicers also generally do a better job of juicing leafy greens.
Appearance and Features
This juicer is BPA free and comes in a choice of a few colors, but we were instantly attracted to the red one. It really does feel like a quality machine and looks very nice on your countertop. Additionally, the juicer comes with a ten-year warranty and a 100-page recipe book and lots of special features.
One of the things that makes the Kuvings unique is the wide feeding shoot, which allows you to juice large pieces of fruit and vegetables. This dramatically reduces preparation time and makes it super-fast to create your juice. One of their selling points is that it can fit a whole apple, and it can, but I found it worked best to at least cut them in half.
This Juicer is Really Quiet
The first thing I noticed and really appreciated when using the juicer was just how quiet it was. I’m accustomed to a high-speed blender, which can be so loud it sounds like construction is going on in your apartment. But with the Kuvings juicer, I would have no problems using this machine early in the morning, even with neighbors in an adjoining building. It really is quite amazing.
It is also really fun to use. As you juice your fruits and veggies the liquid is collected in the main chamber as it rotates and there is a cap over the exit spout. This allows all the different ingredients to mix together in an even blend, then you can release the juice when you’ve finished adding everything. I have to say it is a really satisfying feeling when that juice pours out!
What Can You Juice In This Machine?
The Kuvings juicer works wonderfully for making fruit juices. It did heavy duty on the watermelon juice for us every morning for many months. While living in Malaysia I was making about two or three quarts each day and that is the way we started our mornings, often adding grapefruit, lemon, lime, and ginger to enhance the detoxification benefits. But any kind of fruits make a delicious juice and some others I have tried include apple, grape, pineapple and pomegranate.
It can also make a pretty decent green juice – although it works best if you cut the greens into smaller pieces, no more than three or four inches long. I found this was necessary for vegetables like celery and kale otherwise, they tend to get twisted around the central juicing element, requiring you to stop the juicer and release the fibers. A similar thing occurred when I attempted to juice entire bunches of grapes including their stems.
When making juices with leafy greens it is also helpful to alternate them with more water-rich fruits and veggies like cucumber, apple or pineapple. As long as you follow these guidelines the Kuvings makes an excellent green juice. It is also possible to make wheatgrass juice, which is an added bonus. You just need to cut it into pieces no longer than two inches so that it doesn’t clog the pulp ejector port.
It doesn’t seem to like tougher veggies like carrots and beets as much – but it is possible – and again if you alternate with juicier produce like apples or cucumber it works much better. And another feature is that you can also use the juicer to make fresh nut milk, although I haven’t tried this yet.
Cleaning The Juicer
Like I did, you probably want to know what is involved in cleaning the Kuvings juicer. I previously owned a high-speed blender but juicing seemed like too much work – especially cleaning the machine – which is probably one of the main reasons why it took me so long to invest in a juicer. So I was pleasantly surprised how this juicer is really easy to clean.
The machine comes apart quickly and easily and just takes around five minutes to clean. It comes with a rotating cleaning tool, which makes it simple to remove the fiber that gets caught in the juice strainer, as well as a smaller brush that looks like a toothbrush for getting into harder to reach areas. Cleaning really is a breeze so there are no excuses for not having fresh juice every day!
This Juicer Can Also Make Ice Cream
One of the things that got me excited is the extra attachment – which you can see in the center in front of the juicer in the above image – that allows you to make frozen fruit desserts. This extra part really enhances the versatility of the machine, and if you enjoy Raw Banana Ice Cream or other fruit sorbets you will absolutely love this!
You can use any frozen fruits you like either alone or mixed together to make a delicious healthy ice cream. If you want to add any extra ingredients like additional sweeteners or nut milk you could stir these in afterward. I tried adding them directly into the juicer but it doesn’t create a uniform blend. Although the mixture might not look that attractive coming out of the machine, it does create a pretty delicious frozen fruit blend with a nice consistency.
The juicer also comes with an attachment for making smoothies but I didn’t have much success with this. It seemed to waste a lot of the pulp and the machine blocked up very quickly. I’m not sure if it was because I was doing something wrong but after a couple of tries I gave up and decided I’d much prefer just using a regular blender to make smoothies.
The Bottom Line
Not only is the Kuvings a great juicer, producing delicious cold-pressed high nutrient juice, it also doubles as a frozen fruit ice cream machine. If you are interested in trying this juicer you can get the best price on Amazon via the link below:
